Clifftop viewpoints: choose the path before the photograph
A dramatic coastal photograph often hides the path and barriers that make the viewpoint accessible. Plan to use the official route, even when a social-media image appears to have been taken somewhere more exposed.
Check access before travelling
Look for current information from the park, land manager or local authority. Closures can reflect erosion, weather or conservation needs. A route saved in an old app may no longer be appropriate.
Keep the group together
Choose a walk that suits everyone's mobility and comfort. Keep children and pets under suitable control and stay behind barriers. Do not step toward an edge while looking through a camera or move into a dangerous position for a wider frame.
Have an alternative
Wind, rain or poor visibility can make a viewpoint a poor choice even if it is technically open. Save a lower-level walk or indoor activity so changing the plan feels straightforward. The best travel photograph is not worth turning a manageable outing into an emergency. Follow site-specific guidance and treat the image here as scenic illustration, not a route description or evidence that a particular edge is safe.
